Obituary for JUNE HUFFMAN

Laura June Holmsley Huffman (“Grannie June” to her adoring pack of grandchildren and great-grandchildren) went home to glory on Mothers’ Day, May 8th, 2022. She was born on July 20, 1924 in Comanche County, Texas, to George W. Holmsley, Jr., and Annie Jo (Boykin) Holmsley. George and Annie were a salt-of-the-earth ranching family and Annie tried to continue ranching during the Depression Era after George died in 1939, but she had to sell their ranch shortly after June graduated from Comanche High School in 1941. Annie and June (and baby Louise) moved to Stephenville, Texas, where June attended Tarleton State College from 1942-44, then moved to Fort Worth where she attended business college in 1945-46.

In late 1945, June met and fell in love with a young man named William F. (Frank) Huffman, who had just returned home to Fort Worth from serving as a paratrooper with combat action in Sicily, Italy, France, Belgium (Battle of the Bulge), and Germany in WW II. They married on June 22, 1946 at Sagamore Hill Baptist Church in Fort Worth where they both attended and Frank’s father, William Abner Huffman, was the music director.
As Frank developed his career as a draftsman then commercial aviation artist, June worked an assortment of jobs such as being a telephone exchange operator, receptionist at a doctor’s office, art teacher, and principal’s secretary at Rosemont Middle School.

June was a long-time member and officer in the Fort Worth Girls Service League. She was instrumental in helping many deserving young women secure 4-year college scholarships sponsored by the Girls Service League.
Throughout her life, June was a devout and faithful believer in God the Father, the Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. She was a prayer warrior who regularly sought God’s will and direction over her family and community. For many years June was a faithful member of Wedgwood Baptist Church. Even in her 90’s she attended and participated in Bible Study classes.
June and Frank were married for 52 years until his death in 1998. They had two sons, Alan Kim Huffman, and George Ellis Huffman. Kim was born in 1948 and married Linda Kaye Hill in 1972. Ellis was born in 1952 and married Mattie Diane Pulliam Lucas in 1978. Grandchildren include Jeremy, Jared, and Joshua Huffman; Julia Richardson, Mindy Yates, Brett Lucas, and Laura Kay Renfro. Great-grandchildren are Ethan, Lily, Violet, Rowan, Marian, Winter and Shiloh Huffman; Adilin, James, Nora and Hazel June Richardson; Jacob and Blake Lucas; Gemma and Brooks Ellis Renfro; and Mitchell and Nikki Yates.

June passed away on Mothers’ Day, May 8, 2022 in Crockett County, Texas. The family was celebrating a large gathering family reunion where June was honored as the eldest attendee (97 years) and the first born great-grandchild of the original settlers and homesteaders of Crockett County, Texas: W.P. and Laura Hoover. She fully participated in all reunion activities, played dominoes, visited and joked and laughed with her cherished family and then that night was called home by her Lord and Savior. She went joyfully from her earthly family to her heavenly family in the blink of an eye.

There will be two memorial gatherings to honor June because there are two clusters of friends and family that wish to celebrate her long and blessed life.
Funeral service will be on Sunday, May 29 at 2:30pm at the Ozona Church of Christ, 1002 11th Street, Ozona TX 76943

There will also be a Memorial Service on Saturday, June 4th at 10:30am at the South Leon Baptist Church, Comanche, Texas, with internment to follow at the Albin Cemetery, Newburg, Texas.
